Custom map

Pick your own countries opens the editor on its country picker; a combination opens the editor with those countries already drawn.

Looking for a country that is not in the menus? Every country and territory has a map page of its own: see all map makers, grouped by continent.

Make your own map

  1. Pick a map above. What you pick decides what a click paints: a country, a state, a province or a county.
  2. Choose a color, write what it means in the legend, and click the regions. Paste a list or a column of numbers to paint many at once.
  3. Download or publish. Download a PNG, SVG or PDF, or publish it to get a page and a link.

Need a map that is not on the list? Choose Custom map, tick the countries you want, and the map crops to exactly those. Inside the editor, Change map swaps the base map and keeps every color that still has a region to sit on, and Isolate shows one country or state on its own. The custom map guide walks through it.

What the editor does

  • From a world map down to 3,144 US counties, plus provinces and districts for 32 countries
  • Paint a whole group at once: EU, NATO, G7, Eurozone, a continent
  • Paste a spreadsheet column and the regions paint themselves; paste numbers for a choropleth in 2 to 9 classes
  • Twelve fill patterns, your own border, background and label colors, or no borders at all
  • A legend you write, drag and resize, exported with the map
  • Overlays: rivers, lakes, cities, grid lines, time zones, interstates, county lines; drop in your own images
  • PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF, transparent PNG, region assignments as CSV, no watermark across the map
  • Import a mapchart .txt file and keep editing it here

Common questions

Can I open a map I made on mapchart?

Yes. Save it on mapchart as a .txt configuration, paste it on the import page here, and it opens as an editable map with the colors and legend carried over. It is read in your browser, not uploaded.

Can I make a map of just a few countries?

Yes. Choose Custom map and tick the countries you want; the map crops to them. On any map you can also isolate one country or state on its own.

Can I color a map from a spreadsheet or a list?

Yes. Paste two columns, regions and colors or regions and categories, and every line paints at once. Paste numbers instead and it becomes a choropleth with the legend written from your data.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Free, with no export limit and no watermark across the map, only the site address in small type in a corner. No account to make or download a map; publishing a public page is the one thing that asks you to sign in.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Pan and zoom with two fingers, tap to color, and the export is the same file you would get on a desktop.
